this girl i'm friends with doesnt' really take care of her bike and this boy she used to hang out with - i think he replaced her wheel with one that doesn't fit while he was taking apart her bike to paint it for her.

so now she's got a full Tiagra 9sp setup except it's only got an 8sp cassette.

is there a way to get a standard 9sp wheel and cassette for less than having it built up at an LBS (which i understand would be around $110 or $120). she's kinda low budg and i thought i'd sniff around to see if there was a way to get a deal for her.

thanks!

now this ebay auction makes it sounds like the rear hub accepts 8sp or 9sp.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=58098&item=3685230492&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

the LBS told her she'd need a new wheel (i assume nobody wants to rebuild such cheap-o wheel just to put a different rear hub on it or something like that).

so do some rear hubs accept both 8 and 9sp while others only do one or the other?

8 and 9 speed hubs have the same cassette body. the cassette cogs and chain are narrower for 9 speed cassettes, so you should be able to just get a 9 speed cassette and slap it on there.

that LBS was ********...unless there's something else wrong with the wheel that you're not telling us.

ah,
thanks OTS - it's good news anyway, even if it doesn't explain the scenario that was described to us by the tech at the LBS.

i'll follow up and let ya know how it goes this week hopefully.
