hmmm ...
we cleaning and lubing the bike today when i noticed that the front derailuer cable rubs against the aft end of the bottom bracket shell when it comes up to meet the front derailuer. is this normal? seems like there should be a plastic or teflon guide to protect them from each other ...

Even if it is normal and harmless, such rubbing is not good, and it will eventually wear a groove through your paint. Can you compare to another bike of the same model? If this is a standard "feature" (engineering blunder) of the beast, consider either a teflon sleeve or frequent regreasing of the affected area. None of my control cable inner wires rub directly on the paint on any of my bikes.

My frames have a plastic guide on them under the bb that the cables run through. I would guess that yours is missing. Cant think that not having one is the greatest idea in terms of rubbing/fraying the cable. Just my 2 cents.
