Hi! I am a 55 year oldm male who is is currently out of shape looking to make the next half of my life even better than the first. Even if my body does not agree (LOL) I have an old Trek 7300 for now and shopping for a recumbent or a trike. My goal rightr now is to ride every other day to build up to longer range and higher speed. I only wish my dog could join me, maybe in time. He is about 50 lbs. Well thats about it for me. John, I think you are on the right track, but please consider staying on just two wheels. You may want to start with a big, balloon tire model and work your way up, or down, on a real, modern comfort bike.
I am 71, and have road bikes, comfort and mountain bikes to ride. All are different, all are fun, and it is just a great fitness tool for anyone who is still able to do this sort of thing. Now, if you don't already walk a great deal, then I would start with about a mile or two every day, no excuses. This will begin to build you back up with no strains or pressure. Once you can take a good walk with ease, then you can 'graduate' to a bike. You will find out quickly how important strong legs are.
Where I live, there is seldome any long, level straights, and gears are a must, unless you want to walk your bike up the hills. Good luck. Riding bikes is like a second childhood, and everybody needs a second childhood to make up for putting that all aside to be an adult.

While gears aren't such a major concern here in Florida, the only thing pushing you on down the road and over the causeways are those stompers. Get those legs back, and you'll be amazed at the commets your doctor will toss back to you.
As Jagster points out, you may be best off getting you riding legs back prior to making any great change in the type of bike you're riding. As you'll see from other posts while Florida can a be beautiful place to ride, it's not the safest. Be safe out there!
