a friend of mine purchased a new rear wheel. tHe LBS isnt open on sundays and we would like to go riding tomorrow. Is it possible to switch out the cassette to the wheel with regular tools? Thanks

You do not say what type of cassette, so I will assume a newer Shimano.
If you are lucky and the lock ring isn't tight, you could get it off by using something that is wide enough to go in between two opposite teeth inside the lock ring (I used a narrow putty knife) and use a twisted rag to wrap around the cassette to hold it from spinning..
If the lock ring is really tight, you will need a proper tool...
Save yourself the grief of tring to BS your way through it and get the right tool.
ya i know i just wont beable to purchase it today :(
