Hey guys,

I am a new rider, and new to this forum. I started riding about a month ago, and have since put some miles on my new bike and I love it. I have also been watching the TDF and it pumps me up every time I see it. I dream about riding and I look forward to every time I get on the road.. Right now I am riding about 30-40 miles, 15 the next day, resting, then 30 again, so on.. Slowly going farther and farther every time I ride.. My goal is to eventually join a race or tour. I'm sure some of you guys do this on a regular basis - what are you stories? How did you start, what shape were you in? What should I aim for (average mph, distance) in order to get myself comfortable for my first race or tour? Should I cancel my gym membership and just ride everyday? I know this is a lot of questions, and they are pretty general but any advice would be awesome..
I am very excited to join the cycling community! I had some major problems today on the road (screwed up my back brakes trying to fix my flat tire) and luckily a rider came by and helped me out - everyone seems very helpful..

Sounds to me like you are doing great. Keep on ridin and do a little reading up on basic bike maintenance.
put a little kit together in a seat bag, pack the cell phone, a couple of papertowels for chain grease or cleaning glasses or wipin your nose and you are on your way!

Best thing to do is go on group rides to learn pace line etiquette and bike handling skills, you'll also get a good sense of where you are in terms of riding shape. If you ride solo you'll be delighted to feel the benefits of riding in a pace line if you can keep the pace. If you have a local bike shop you frequent see if they do group rides and ask about joining, some of them include racers who might be willing to give you pointers on how to train.
