Hi all.
Does/has anyone else gotten back pain in the kidney area while riding? I have been riding for about 3 years now, completed a few centuries and logged many miles. Just this year, after about 30 to 40 minutes into the ride I start to get a pain in the left kidney area of my back. If i stand on my left peddle straightening the left side of my body the pain seems to go away but comes back after a short while of riding again. I have not started anything new.

Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

You may want to ask this in general cycling, any back pain I get is along the spine and not to the side so my advice may not be appropriate.

Of course, this shouldn't be taken as medical advice, but I've noticed that any slight change in saddle or handlebar height, as well as any variation in riding position, can lead to sharp pains in various areas of my body. Have you adjusted anything recently?

No I havent. Everything is pretty much the same. I do carry stuff in a camelbak but try to keep it minimal.
As of now Im going to try moving as much as I can from the camelbak to a wedgepack on the bike. Trying to take more weight off my back.

Is there something in the camelback that constantly shifts and needs to be adjusted by a short, jerky move, such as a shake of your back? It always amazes me how a minor little move - repeated constantly throughout a bike ride - can have such a painful or damaging effect over the long haul. I once took off on a 50-mile ride with a pannier that encroached on my pedal revolution. Every time my left foot reached the 3 O'clock position, it would rub slightly against the pannier and make a tiny "woosh" sound. At mile one, it seemed harmless, just a minor inconvenience. By mile 50, my left heel was a bloody mess and I had practically rubbed a hole through the pannier!

Good point. I do keep the shoulder straps kinda loose. I didnt think that a very minor shift may be a possibility. Ill try tightening them a bit, try to keep everything inside tightly secure.

Also someone mentioned that it may be that my core muscles are a little to weak. I dont do anything else but ride. Ill start some core workouts as well and see where that gets me.

For me, that usually just has a Three Stooges-type effect. I start to exercise OTHER muscles, and then THEY start to hurt -- but at least that makes me forget about the pain I had in the FIRST place!

Try it. I'd be curious to know the results.
