Foo - Hey, could've been worse...

Yesterday, I hit some local singletrack and for the first time, committed the cardinal error of falling down the downhill side of an off camber trail. Weight was centered wrong, didn't unclip properly, epic number of things going wrong. Thankfully, I landed in a bush & only earned some trail rash, as opposed to sliding 30ft down the hill. Relatively speaking, I got off easy. So post about a time you said to yourself, "Hey, could've been worse."

Riding at the North Shore on Grapevine Lake, I came upon a HUGE oak tree that had fallen over/across the trail. I eyed the gap under the tree and figured I could make it, so got as low as I could on my rig and kept on going. I was under the tree and feeling good about my decision. That is about when my front end hit a rock, or a bump or whatever and threw me up into the air. My helmet hit the tree HARD. The people in the group I was riding with said it sounded like a gun shot when my head hit tree. Did not come off the bike, but I stopped soon after to find my Giro helmet split clean in two. Ended up with a stiff neck and a bit of a head ache and a new helmet.

A friend was w/ a guy in a similar situation, though from what I was told, he ended up wedging himself under the tree while still mounted upright and his homies had to lift the tree off him.

Relatively speaking, I got off easy. So post about a time you said to yourself, "Hey, could've been worse."

High School

Riding this weekend. We were downhill riding at Fernie. I must have hit a rock or something that threw my bike a little. My bike went down over the edge of the cliff & I managed to throw myself against the rock on the other side. Other than a giant gouge out of the paint on the frame right above the bottom bracket - no damage.

I was kinda shakey for the rest of that run though...

1964-2009

Yesterday, we cut across an area by going on a private road. I went through some sand that was covering some bumps. I lifted off the saddle a little and hit one of the bumps. The nose of the saddle came up and hit me perfectly between the legs.

It could have been worse; I was able to hold off on throwing up and the swelling isn't too bad this morning.

I should never have tried to pass the RTS bus on the right as it was lumbering west across the Broad St. Bridge in Rochester 30 years ago. (Tude and spreggy will know where this is, and can attest to the monumental stupidity of the maneuver) Miraculously, I escaped unscathed.
