Trying to figure out a good time and heart-rate for warming up. I just got a new heart-rate monitor; my max heart rate is in the neighborhood of 186-190, and my resting heart rate is ~73. What should my heart-rate be when I'm warming up, and for how long should I stay at that effort level?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Hi,
if you don't have a book on Zone training, get one. Just cycle gently for a few minutes to warm up.

To blanket a statement. One person can go for a minute warmup and its fine and another needs 2 or 3 miles so were are all different. Age has a lot to do with it and how offten you ride.
Speaking for myself, I make it a point to pedal for at least 10 min. staying below the triple digit in my HRM.

I need at least 20 minutes of warm up, before I can make repeated all out efforts, whether training or racing. I have found if I haven't got at least 20 minutes of warm up, when the ***** hits the fan, I will never really recover from it, and have a difficult rest of the ride.
Hi,
I live in Maine, on the side of a mountain. A lot of my rides start like this.
Zero Sec- 'Ok, let's pedal easy for a while
30 Sec- Oh, there's a hill
35 Sec- Crap, it's a big hill
45 Sec- Maybe
46 Sec- I
47 Sec- can
48 Sec- pedal
49 Sec- kinda
50 Sec- easy
.....Warmup, Maine style....

I usually warm up, and stay in the small ring for about 5 miles... after that I throw it in the big ring and hammer on !
