You: Have a nice road bike that is sitting in your garage. It's 59cm. It's full carbon. It's got Dura-Ace or Campy Super Record (or even SRAM Red!) components. It's getting dusty. You want to do something nice to feel good about yourself.

Me: I am poor, but that's a good thing because I'm an aspiring Buddhist. The only downside to that is I cannot afford a super-sweet roadbike like yours. Without a road bike I do silly things. For example: Last weekend I wanted to ride up to the crest of the Sandias. The only problem is that my only bike is a track bike (that's a brakeless fixed gear bike, for those who don't know). This bike only has one gearing option (48 x 17), so I was basically "big-ringing" it all the way up the crest. It got pretty tough by the time I got up to 9000' but that's now why I stopped. I stopped because I was absolutely petrified of trying to ride back down without any brakes. Somehow or other I didn't die as I headed down where I stopped at the ski area. From there I called for a ride home, because I simply couldn't control my descent going down.

Together, we will help each other. You can keep me from dying on foolish rides like the one I took last weekend. I will help you ease the suffering of another human (me) which is good for us both spiritually. I'm passing on what I've learned (the importance of compassion and helping others) and you're in turn putting into practice some genuinely beneficial spiritual principles. Also, I may or may not be a reincarnation of some super-guru or something. Riding is my favorite form of meditation. And if I am somehow create some significant spiritual footprint in this world, more meditation may possibly bring that about sooner (which could have additional benefit for you and your loved ones as well.) I would also give you a personal shout-out if/when I would be interviewed by Oprah as we discuss my book (although I might think that quiet humility would be better and publish the book anonymously, or turn down personal media attention as to better represent the ideals of "being nobody, going nowhere.") At any rate, we both get a pretty sweet deal. At the very least, your bike that is gathering dust would find a loving home where it would get the attention it deserves.

I should mention that I am open to the possibility of bikes made of aluminum or titanium if they are super-sweet. Heck, even a steel frame would be acceptable if you've got a vintage Campy Record gruppo on there.

Thank you, and I hope to hear from you soon.

It's been getting some interesting replies in the albuquerque craigslist.

Interesting approach. And the responses aren't falling for it. But it only takes one...

I wish him luck.

"Aspiring Buddhist?" If he can't even get that right, there's not much hope for him.

+1 on the hipster comment, too.

I love when people apply their principles of selflessness and compassion to you. "Guess what? I am so kind and magnanimous that I will allow you to be generous to me." Asshat.

He's "open to the possibility of bikes made of aluminum or titanium" and "even a steel frame would be acceptable". How nice of him.

Oh the SOB is definitely choosey . . . he only wants steel if it has Super Record, and would prefer D/A or Super Record even on the carbon. He's got some cojones!

I think he is trolling to get our chamoises (what is the plural chamois?) in a bunch.

BTW a roadie won the Sandia Crest climb race a couple years ago using a a fixie but he had a 39 chainring or lower.
