Mountain Biking - Cranks

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Not the people who hang round this board :)
Anybody got any info, good links on differing splines and pros and cons?

What do you want to know? Isis or shimano splined or square tapered? Pros and Cons?
Splined way better than square taper. The bottom brackett is stronger and lighter, and the splines prevent overtightening the crank bolt and messing up your chain line by bottoming out the crank against the inside of the spline.
Cons are that if you don't line up the splines and start tightening you can destroy your crank arm! You gotta try real hard to mess it up though!
The difference between Isis and Shimano? Only depends what type of cranks you want to use. The two systems are NOT interchangeable!
Crank availability, I believe the splined will take over and the square tapers will be phased out, but some will always be available for replacement, just newer models will be splined only!
My preference, I personally like the RaceFace Next LP or just the normal LP's if cost is an issue! I prefer these over XTR because of powder coat color selection! The Race Face rings shift as well as Shimano's so that's not an issue.
My next set of cranks will probably be some Profile Racing Chromoly cranks for my P.3. Super strong, but heavy! Basically indestructable! That and I can get a good deal on em!
As far as links I dunno exact, try these www.raceface.com or www.profileracing.com or a search on Google.com
Good Luck

Thanks,
XTR level is going to be out of my price-range It'll probably be either hollow tech Deore or something equivalant.
I think I heard something about Deore being available in Octalink (sp?) or ordinary splined?

Octalink is Shimano's term for their Deore/LX/XT splined cranks. The biggest problem I have with Shimano's spline system is that the splines do not run the full length of the mating area making it easier to misalign them when using self extracting bolts. Don't get me wrong, I have 2 sets of XTR cranks and love them dearly. Truvativ makes fairly nice cranks at a reasonable price, The Stylo Teams or SLs are comparable to XT/LX level and are available in the more universal ISIS standard. The only deviations for ISIS stuff is the size of the bolts as some BBs use a smaller bolt resulting in a stronger spindle.
