I thought you guys might know something about this or want to give advice.

I was at the thrift store by my place of work today and saw a blue Motobecane mixte. Lugged steel (tubing quality not that great, 10xx, can't remember), roadie bars, alloy rims, Sugino alloy cranks, Weinmann U-brakes, 10 speed. I picked it up and it felt pretty light. The wheels look really wobbly, but they could probably be serviceable. It definitely needs new tires.

They want $29.99 for it, which is probably a pretty good deal, but maybe not mind-blowing. Think it would be a good thing to pick up? I was thinking about making a SS/fixed shopper out of it, probably with some North Road bars and full fenders. I've already got my transportation needs covered, and it's not like I have a lot of money, but it seems like it might be worth it.

Opinions?

It's hard to say without seeing pictures of it but $29.95 seems kind of high seeing that there is a glut of these kinds of bikes all over the place. My friend who is a collector trash picks these kinds of bikes or gets them from sympathetic neighbors, although Motobecane is not half bad. A bike shop might charge alot more for it, however. A competent shop would also know alot more about it.

I'm certainly not a frame tubing expert but I think Tange and Ishiwata is pretty good stuff, depending on the type. A fixed/SS would be a good idea.

See if they will take less for this bike.
