"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - How many hours a week are you training?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Just curious how many hours a week most of you are training. Feel free to include any additional information you feel necessary.

I'm racing 4 hours this week. Training an additional 3 or 4...
normal week (not Superweek), 7-10 hrs. on the bike, Cat 4 (for now)
I spend about 10 to 12 hours a week on the bike, 4 or 5 running, 2 or 3 in the water.
Looking to make that 14 to 15 on the bike next year, and dropping most of the other stuff.

8-10 is all that is necessary for the short racing we do here in MABRA at the Cat 3/4 level. So long as it's quality training being done.
normally 7 to 9. 10 occaisionally. 2 weeks this year >10, none >12.
typical is broken down into 1 to 1.25 hrs. on Tu, Wed, Thurs
3-ish hrs. sat and sun
when racing 2x/weekend, a little less.

im attempting the WR training program :) where is that guy anyway?
Always shoot for 10 hrs. on the bike, both training and racing. Lately it's been closer to 7 hrs., but heavily skewed towards racing.
When? Right now? Average?
Average throughout the season. I understand when building base or racing a lot, the training volume will change.
cutting back.
last week i trained for +/- 3 hours, and raced +/- 8 hours.

I average 17 hours a week over the year. 18 if you account for a couple of weeks off the bike.

This week I have a little over 3 hours. I'm thinking another 4+ hrs before my race.

I checked 5-6... it's been a bit busy around here lately :thumb:
training hours ~ 11
racing hours < 0
It's actually somewhat enjoyable to ride a bike for no reason other than beat my training partner in sprints and float through the local group rides.

On average, 8 hours = 2 hrs on Tues, off Wed, 2hrs on Thurs, off Fri, 2.5hrs on Sat, 1.5hrs on Sun. If racing, then just Tues/Thurs at 4hrs + couple hours of weekend racing. Seems enough for Masters racing if I avoid the extremely long or extremely hilly road races and make it all high quality training.

I would if I could...
if you race that much you could die
Was doing 11-12 but am bumping it up to 16-18 the next two weeks as part of an 8 week plan.

10-13 hours a week.
Much less if I'm on vacation or traveling. If the weather's really dreary all week, then I skip a workout or two. I can't stand riding in the rain for a week straight.

8 week old baby. 5 year old in sports. Summer trips. Friends getting married. Etc, etc.
I've got so many excuses, they're starting to clutter the place.

I usually get in around 8 hours or so. About an hour a day on the bike during lunch, then some running/walking when I get home at night.
I'd like to ramp it up a little, but there isn't enough time in the day right now. I'm just doing what I can when time allows.

I rarely "train" but I like to ride my bike as much as possible.
I voted 5-6 in the poll because that is what I am riding right now. But average through the season, not counting weeks completely off the bike, is about 8. I was putting in about 9 hours a week average through the winter and early spring with 11 hours on my biggest week.
I'm a Cat 2 but I split my racing between P12 and 40+ races.
Looks like average for the year is 16 hours/week. Average over the last few weeks was more like 19. That includes all time on the bike, including casual rides with the wife...

Same here. Exact same range.
I try to hit 14-15 over the latter half of winter when im building base. All z2 though.

I put in 11 to 12 as a reasonable average for the year. The way I figure it is that I end up with close to 11K miles for the year so it must average to a bit over 200 miles per week. A fair amount of those miles are solo base at slightly less than 20 mph average. Team training rides average out slower because it is like being in the infantry during a war: lots of waiting around doing nothing and then all hell breaks loose for a short time. The local hammerhead ride averages out faster, so between those two it is probably a wash.
And I also still suck.
I voted 7-8 which is about my average, unless it's a brevet week which could mean up to 40 hours over two days alone.
With about 270 hours for the year so far, I plan to come in somewhere around 500 hours total. (Cat 5 fwiw)

You won't melt. The fact is that once you become comfortable riding in the wet you have a huge leg up on the competition when it rains in a race. I'll skip a day for heavy lightning (we get that a lot) and if it is raining so hard that visibility is an issue I might stay pretty much off the roads and ride the local bike trail. (Don't give me st!t about MUP riding. This is not your typical MUP. I have seen multiple Pros on it as well as countless Cats 2 and 3's.)
Cleaning the bike gets tiresome after doing it on several consecutive days. I will give you that. Having a second bike helps out a lot here. If it is likely to rain you just ride the bike that needs cleaning the most. If there is a second rain day then I clean two bikes instead of one. It isn't twice the work.
Do you have two pairs of shoes? I find that when I ride in a downpour even the newspaper trick won't dry my shoes out fast enough overnight. Having that second pair always ready helps a lot. And if I am starting out in a steady rain I usual wear my secondary pair out the door.

5-7 hours is normal but in July I follow the tour. For every mile they ride I train one minute - a 120 mile day for them is 2 hours for me. July has been 10-11 hours so far. Right now I'm behind 42 minutes but I'll catch up this weekend, hopefully.
I used to lift 12 hours a week and now I see if I was biking that much I might be going pretty good.

Averaging 15 hours/week since March.
This is my first full year doing this, so I'm following the Eddy Merckx plan & just riding a lot... not really following a structured plan or thinking of it as training.
First race is this weekend... :thumb:

why sad? It's less than several in the poll and not that much more than many. Some of that time is spent riding with the wife too.

I didn't select one, but it'd be 1-6 hours on average.
M: 2 hours (group ride, to me race pace, and this is the easy ride with almost no racers on it)
Tu: 1 hour (race)
W: 2 hours (1.8 hours as easy as possible or stopped, 0.2 hours racing)
Th:0
F:0
Sa: 0-1
Su: 1 (race + 5 min warmup)
If it rains M, Tu, or W, it's 0. I don't even bother taking the bike out of the car. Then I make Sa = 0.5-1
Last week it rained Tu, We, so I did 4 hours - M2, Sa1, Su1.
This week it's sunny all three days so I'll prob skip Sa. So 6 hours.
On weeks where it rained M, Tu, We, I'll just do an hour on the weekend.
When I go to CA in Feb, I try and train more - like 20-30 hours each week. But that's 1-2 weeks/year. I was sick this year so I did like 15 hours in 1.5 weeks. Not sure exactly how many, but something like that.
During the Bethel series, I'm too tired to do anything on M, Tu, We after holding the race, so I usually ride 1.5 hours a week - 1 hour race, 0.5 hours on Saturday. I lose a lot of fitness over those 5-6 weeks.
You guys train a lot.

OP said are, as in this week. This and next week are 17-18 hour weeks for me, so I chose that. Average has been somewhere around 11 though.
This is supposed to be an 11 hour week for me. Next few weeks are longer.
Average is lower than that to this point.
