Cyclocross - ergo with a shimano front derailleur.

So i'm about to convert my ultegra ride with 10speed ergo shifters. I have a couple of questions for some of you that may have done this. I have a 9speed cassette (eventually going 10) and understand that a 10 speed ergo will work without a problem.

Which 10 speed ergos should i look for? Chorus 2009? What is Quickshift and what is escape?

And finally, i've read that Shimano front derailleur springs are super strong vs. campy. Should i just get a campy fd as well. Or, does this QS/Escape feature allow me to trim the front with a Shimano without any problems?

I would stay away from the escape mechanism personally, as the thumb button only allows you to drop one gear at a time much like shimano which sort of defeats part of the reason for running Campy.
I ran 07(?) Centaur with escape and a 105 front derailleur with no issues, I only swapped to the Chorus front because I got a cheap used one.

I can only trim little to big with the 07(?) Centaur, the 08 Record on my road bike trims in both directions.

So I'm kind of leaning towards the newer ergo 2009 with those curved hoods. Do you know which ones don't have the escape?

Some Veloce have the Escape, some don't. All of the Centaur and above don't have Escape. None of them have QS anymore. I believe Mirage and below are no more. Unfortunatley Veloce is now the bottom group and looks like it. Pity, it used to be a real bargain group. Good luck

I think none of the 09 ergo shaped stuff is escape. I believe the veloce with the escape is the older shape.

I personally don't think the Veloce stuff looks that bad. Centaur is available in alloy and carbon, Veloce is all black and a bit lighter than the Centaur. It is my understanding that the guts are all the same but I don't care enough to pull apart the shifters I have to find out.

I basically grabbed what was cheap and in-stock. First go round was carbon Centaur, 2nd was veloce.
If I were building a cross bike I'd either go alloy Centaur or Veloce, because they are cheaper and possibly the levers are a bit tougher than the carbon stuff.

The QS was marketing gobbledygook associated with the FD lever arm throw and how hard you had to push. All in all of not much consequence in the real world. I believe ultrashift falls in the same category of verbage.
