I just bought a new Wipperman 911 chain for my roadbike. As always, the first thing I did was clean off the gunk they pack chains in. However, after soaking it in some Simple Green and then rinsing it off, I noticed this white residue inside the links. Anyone happen to know what this might be?

Cosmoline or light corrosion from using Simple Green on SS (problem I know well from my days as a detailer)

When you use a non-petrolium solvent it emusifies the oil because the stuff like simple green are water soluble. I used to notice when I cleaned my rollerblades with citrus stuff it would turn white and pasty at first.

That's my theory anyway.
