General Cycling Discussion - NYC: Where to buy a used bike for $100-150?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm totally new, this is my first post.

I'm trying to get back into biking, I pulled out my old bike from the shed and realized it was time for retirement. I bike mainly to get fresh air, and just enjoy riding around local public parks and neighborhoods in Queens.

I'm on a very tight budget, but I don't want to buy a crappy Wal-mart "toy" -- I've learned the vernacular here fairly quickly!

Where could I find a quality used bike in my price range? I'm open to buying used because I simply cannot afford the high prices I keep encountering while researching online.

Are there any fairly priced used bike shops in Manhattan or Queens?

Craigslist is your friend.

Thanks. I thought there would be some secret place with used bikes. I guess craigslist could work out...

You may also want to try the regional forum for some input.

What kind of bike are you looking for? I would guess from your message a hybrid, but you could also be seeking a road bike.

If you find a specific older bike that you are unsure of, the Classic & Vintage valuation forum is a good place to ask about whether something is a good deal.

And if you have the transportation to do it, try Craigslist for outlying areas... Hudson Valley, New Jersey, or even the Poconos if you want to look that far. They might have better deals.
