Foo - Really dumb photography question

I just started slowly getting back into shooting after a long long hiatus.

as with many things I haven't done in many years (like reading the label on a 12" LP album) I sadly realize without reading glasses I am more or less blind these days.

I am having some awkward issues shooting with my reading glasses on - With a digital P&S I could easily look at the LCD at arm's length with my reading glasses on (heck, if the screen is large enough I don't even need them, esp. with auto focus), but with a manual camera and viewfinder it's a different story.

from what I've read online it seems most people who need reading glasses wear them while shooting....it seems I've been just leaning towards the 'squint and bear it' thing.....any opinions out there?

Many SLR's have a little toggle next to the viewfinder, usually recessed so it's pretty much impossible to accidentally (or sometimes even purposely) adjust it. It controls the focus of the viewfinder image and may help.

For the F2 there is a soft rubber eyecup that attaches to the finders eyepiece that helps a lot for glasses and actually even for without glasses and also diopters/eyepiece correction lenses that screw onto the finders eyepiece so you don't have to wear glasses. Ask B and H about it

I've found it next to impossible for me to wear my glasses while shooting photos. I also can't see well enough to not use auto focus. Not a chance. :(

are you farsighted/near/ or wear bifocals? I have progressive bis now but I don't really need the far away much - it's just a slight correction, but mostly so I don't have to crane my eyes over reading glasses when looking across the room. One of my eyes is much worse tho....the stronger one can still work in a loupe or camera fairly well. But definitely better with glasses on.

I have astigmatism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astigmatism). Everything is just a little blurry to me without my glasses on. I can see well enough to take pictures, but there's no way I can manually focus without glasses.

gotcha. that must be challenging....though judging from your photos it's not really holding you back very much.:)

Thanks. :) It's not much of a challenge with photography as long as I have autofocus, but I have to use my glasses when I'm in Photoshop.
