Looking for a set of race day tubular tires. Which have you had good experiences with, which didn't work out so well? Lighter is less rolling resistance are better and top concerns.

I have heard multiple recommendations for those, the only issue is that they come in at ~250g. The tires I had my eye on were the Veloflex Records, which come in at ~180g. Thats 170g difference for a pair, almost half a lbs. Are they really that good?

I had the vittorias on a pair of zipps and loved how they felt.. much better than the tufo <215's..

The Veloflex records are a bit too light, ZERO flat protection..

Go for the suppleness of the vittorias. The total weight is secondary to rolling resistance which is where the 320 tpi, latex-tubed corsa CX shines

Ted, I don't know too much about tires, but the Veloflex Records say they have a TPI of 350. From what I understand, higher TPI means less rolling resistance.

Why do you say the Carbon's over the Record's?

Another vote for Vittoria Evo CX. Unless you can get your hands on some NOS Criterium Seta Extras. And if you can, let me know where.

Love my Vittoria EVO CX-II (320 tpi version)

Rolls smooth, no flats (so far), light but not stupid light (flat protection), super sticky.

Cons: wears fast, is pretty much a race only tire.

You'll see pro's now using the standard CX versus the Crono version in the time trails. Those super light tires like the Crono CX or Veloflex records offer no flat protection. Getting a flat costs you more time than a few grams on the tire.

I hadn't considered looking at it like that. When you say "prone to flats," what causes a flat more often then not? Is it a matter of impact or a deterioration?

its a matter of any little piece of glass or sharp object poking right through... a regular tire offers some protection against this.. tires like the records are great if you are racing at an indoor velodrome, but not the road.

ps, first ride on gp4000's was a very nice feeling coming off of tufo<215's.. very supple

I race the Vittoria Pave CG's and I may not ride anything else. They've got an awesome suppleness, supreme flat protection (you never know, but the last thing you want to to a.) get a flat during a rae and b.) destroy an expensive tire)
They really came in handy in my last road race when I was going downhill at 55 mph on chip/seal roads, with no brakes and a wicked left handed turn. I shot down the inside of about 10 riders and I'm positive that if I had anything else, I would have gone right off the edge.
