I haven't been around long enough so i'm putting this out there... is Mark Cavendish as good or better than Mario Cipollini in his prime?

He certainly looks as fast and as unbeatable! And in Mark Renshaw, he has as good a leadout as Cipo did with Sylvio Martinello. The real question will be longevity. Too early to tell, but right now I wouldn't bet against Cav racking up over 2 dozen Tour wins if he keeps at it like this! Cav has yet (to my knowledge) gone down in a high speed sprint crash...and that can really rattle a sprinter's nerves. I never wish something like that on anyone, but if you keep at this game long enough, it's bound to happen.

Very good point about the longevity... I remember hearing in a documentary on Cipo a few years back that he had a lung capacity of 8.2 litres; I wonder what Cavendish is, just for fun. :)

I would love to see a head to head both in their primes sprinters duel with Cavendish and Cipo.
I think the jury's still out on who's the better sprinter as Cavendish hasn't been around all that long.
The one thing I can say for sure, Cipo had more style and panache, I mean seriously who else would
show up dressed like Caesar, or an anatomic skinsuit?

You need to look at who they are sprinting against also. Not making a choice either way. Just saying that if the competition is relatively week it's easier to look incredible.

The question implies Cavendish is in his prime now; I don't think he is.

I reckon Cipo might have had the edge on brute power but Cav is already a better technician. Time will tell: the Manxman is off to a flying start.

Can't imagine Cavendish in a Zebra skin suit, though.
