Touring - Replacing the bungee in folding tent pole

Hi All,

I remember bookmarking a page about replacing the bungees in the folding tent poles, but for the life of me I can't find it. And I can't find in on the forum search function either.

So, please, if anyone has any ideas or tips about replacing those rascally bungee in the aluminum poles, please let me know.

I have an REI Clipper tent ( 3 poles, 2 persons). It's about 7 yrs old so the bungees are all warped and no longer working, though the rest of the tent is OK. Well, the rubber coat on the underside of the rain tarp is peeling too.

Can these poles be repaired with basic tools? (I'm on the road now)

Would REI repair the poles if I brought them into the store?

If it's from rei they will either repair it, or if you want you can exchange it for a new comparable product. They have a 100% satisfaction guarantee on everything they sell. I've returned stuff after a few months of using it just cause I didn't like it. It's part of the advantage of it being a co-op.

I added the shockcords to the poles on an old Eureka tent that didn't have them originally. It was any easy DIY. Here's one kit for doing a repair:

I just replaced the shockcord in the poles of my Sierra Designs tent. It was very simple, the ends of the poles screw off, I untied the shockcord that was knotted to the end cap, and replaced it with new shockcord.

I bought my shockcord at REI (several varieties sold by the foot), so even if they don't repair/replace it for you, you should be able to do it on your own with a few dollars and a knife/scissors.

I left the tent upcountry. Will see it next week. Sounds simple. I'll try to jury rig something from local supplies. Didn't know the ends screw off :P
