We have our first tandem on order, an '04 Co-motion Speedster Co-pilot (Pewter metallic, S&S coupled, Wound Up CF fork, Ultegra/XTR, Rolf Vigor Tandem wheels). Only 1 more month till delivery...
We live in western Colorado and are blessed with great scenic paved roads as well as even more scenic backroads (e.g. packed dirt/forest and jeep roads). Although we'll primarily be riding on paved roads, I'm wondering if the Speedster is somewhat dirt-capable? I'm not thinking about technical singletrack; just a change in pace and some respite from the sun under forested dirt roads (e.g. Owl Creek Pass, for those familiar with the area).
I've been interested in cyclocross single bikes for this purpose which have a more relaxed road geometry, beefier frames, higher bottom brackets (for jumping logs), allowances for larger 700c knobbies (~35mm), cantilever brakes, and heavier duty wheels. I suppose I should call Co-Motion first but wanted to throw this topic out and see what your experiencs have been.
I'm thinking about a few possible problems with our Speedster:
1) Frame. Beefy enough? The dirt roads aren't bad though, and aren't tandem frames made beefier anyway in general compared to singles?
2) C/F Fork. Similar thoughts above. Also, large enough to accomodate 35 mm knobbies (W/U site doesn't give info)?
3) S&S couplers. Possible increased stress and wear/tear with the rougher roads?
4) Low spoke count Rolf wheels. Durability? May need a second pair of beefer wheels (anybody with a replaced pair laying around they want to sell?).
Curious to hear your opinions.
Regards.
Abe
