Mountain Biking - Beginner needing answers :)

hi guys... iv decided, that ima spend bout 300 quid on stuff.... ok, i need advice on if what im getting is rubbish, or if i dont need it..., ok lets begin :D first off, oakley toolpouch 3 (camelback kinda thing), gloves, scott limited baggy short, scott limited jersey, multi tool, puncture repair, c02/air pump (both) w/ cartridges (duh), azonic accelarator pedals, six six one veggie shin gaurds (reccomended as the pedals can rip my shins up) and thats it... if you think i need something else, or if i dont need something, then please reply... please help :d ( by the way, this adds up closer to 250 than 300 but i still have 50 spare :D

depends what you are into. For XC MTB I would get some shoes, but I would give back the shim guards.

I would save my money on the Scott Limited clothing and purchase some of the Performance house brand clothes. They hold together well and are much less expensive. Also, an Oakley branded Camelbak sounds like a ripoff waiting to happen.

(and i have the glasses... these my dads, but he got new ones woohoo! :D) i thought about the scott limited stuff, as they are on special offer at evans, 25 for the top, 40 for the shorts... the shorts have the liner too... so, i dont know, but ill have a look...

How about clipless pedals and shoes?great idea! that means that i have 120 for shoes and clipless pedals...any suggestions? iv thought bout the chank brothers acid or eggbeater, i really need to know what to get... :D

I have Shimano SPDs because I use the same shoes for my road and mountain bike and I like them, but the eggbeaters seem to be very popular for mountain biking. I don't think you can go wrong. Ask your LBS if they'll let you try a couple options.

hi guys, iv had a rethink, and as im 13, and only just getting into it, iv gone with flat.... i think i might get straightlines, and maybe some 5 10's when i get the money... what do you think? is it worth it, or should i get the clipless, remember, they are EXACTLY the same price for both ( although that is the straightlines only... w/o shoes... and the clipless is 85 w/ shoes...

Sounds like you are just itching to spend some money. Just get the things you really need to ride with and save the extra money for later.

On that list, I'd get the gloves, the tools, patch kit, extra tubes, pump. I assume you have a helmet and sunglasses? You don't really need the CO2 stuff. How about a backpack with a Camelbak bladder?

Maybe wait a while and get shoes and pedals once you are sure you like biking. Get the SPDs cause you get adjust the tension.

Get the shin guards if it makes you more comfortable riding (I have them and they are ok).

Save the money for later... you will know what you need the more you ride.

^^ Word. Put your money into the basics first, if you later decide you want to get into freeride or downhill where you'll really need the shin guards and extra safety equipment (beyond helmet), you can buy them later when you've saved up more money. One thing to remember is that at 13 you're probably going to have to spring for another bike in a year or two as you grow.

How about spending some money on a grammar book? Have you ever heard of bullet points?
