im looking at the motobecane fantom comp ds http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/fantom_cds_clearance.htm and the jamis parker 1.0 http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/BI290B01-Jamis+Parker+10+Bike+2008.aspx which is better for the money? i was thinking the jamis because its got a recon fork

ok, first off, just cause the fork is better doesnt mean its a better bike, ok, im not a pro, but they look like there quite similary good, the jamis had good forks, yet the fantom has a couple of models lower, but still pretty good, they have roughly the same rear, but the fantom has a 20 quid advantage (not much :D). then, the jamis has full deor derailiers, while the fantom one has an xt rear deraliour meaning it will be smoother on the gear changes... so, i dont know, but these are factors to consider, also, the jamis has hydrolic discs, but to be honest they arenet the best iv seen quite a few good reaviews on the mechanical avid bb5's saying there are just as good as some hydrolic discs from the fantom... id know this cause iv gt avid 7's, took a while of searching, but remember, the cables streach on mechanical, but you have to bleed the hydrolic... so, there are the factors to consider.

I like biscuits and gravy . . . but it's terribly unhealthy.

When considering Bikesdirect, I would only buy from them if they had a considerable advantage as far as components and price. At this level, I would definitely go the Jamis because of the similar price, componentry and the Recon shock which is quite a step up from the low-end Tora 289 (Tora shocks go 289, 302. 318). Moreover, Jamis has a reputation for quality of manufacture and customer service that BD does not. That being said, my next bike will probably be from the higher end Fantom series.
