I've been thinking about converting a pair of flip-flops for casual riding by adding something stiff to the bottom. I wondered if anyone has done this and if so, what they used?

No one has ever done it - you'd be the first. Post pics.

Why not just buy some sturdier sandals?

IMO too easy for the feet to slip out of the sandals or the sandals to slip off of the pedals with potentially a major foot OUCH! IMO any sandals used for biking need to have a heel retention strap and extend forward beyond the toes a bit.

I like the current Shimano SPD sandals but would prefer more open tops.
