Hi,

On Saturday, me and a friend are embarking on a journey from London, England to Lands End (500km). We'll be doing an average of 70km a day, the longest day is 93km and the shortest around 60km. The distances aren't a problem for us, but it'll be the first time we ride self-supported with tents, sleeping bags etc. (we have a hotel booked for one night in the middle of the trip and one night at the end but that's it).

I'll be carrying my sleeping bag on a rack mounted above the rear wheel, my roll mat clipped to the outside of a 30L rucksack and everything else goes inside the backpack. There are two main areas I'd like your help in:

1) Aside from the necessities like change of clothes, etc, what essentials do I need to bring? I've got spare tubes, a decent bike tool, hydration system, puncture repair kit, first aid, anything else I should have for the bike?

2) In terms of nutrition, we will have decent breakfasts and attempt to eat as many carbs as possible, we also have 2 energy gels per day to consume. Does that sound okay? Should I aim for 3 big meals or spread out my intake over the day? Anything specific I should be eating/drinking? I've also heard I should drink 500ml-1L of water in an hour, is this correct?

Any help would be much appreciated. :thumb:

You might want to ask your questions in the Touring forum ... the Long Distance forum is generally for rides where you just keep riding and don't bother with things like sleeping at night. :D
