Howdy,

I just moved to Maryland from Tennessee and I'd love to meet some other cyclists (roadies, mountain bikers, casual cyclists, whatever) in the area. Is anyone in/around the Laurel, MD area who might be interested in meeting up and riding over to Savage Mill (it's only a couple miles on primarily bike-friendly roads) to hit up the Rams Head Tavern sometime? They have a bike rack!

A little bit about me... (AKA: I promise, I'm not a serial killer, please come hang out with me.)
I'm 24, married, and I am taking a stab at the "car-free" lifestyle to save money, get exercise, and because its funner to ride a bike than sit in a car in traffic. I have a hard tail mountain bike [Felt Q720] that I'm not especially proficient at riding off road. I also ride a commuter/hybrid bike [Raleigh Detour Deluxe] with all the bells and whistles (dynamo lighting system, rack, fenders). Finally I have a transgendered fixed gear [Motobecane Messenger] that sometimes runs as a tarck bike with bullhorns and a fixed gear drive train and other times (currently) runs with a SRAM 7 speed internal gear hub and drop bars.

My wife and I moved here because she completed her masters degree and got a job in Beltsville. So far I'm really liking the area but I'd love to meet some other cyclists.

Pedal on,
-Ryan

PS: If anyone else in the area is into beer, I'm thinking about joining the World Beer Club (http://www.ramsheadtavern.com/savage/beerclub.html) where you drink 100 different beers they serve (not all at once of course) and you get a shirt, a mug, and your name on a plaque. I haven't started yet so anyone else who wants to try it with me would not have any catch-up to do.

Hi, Ryan, I live in Severn (just south of BWI Airport) and bike commute at least a few days a week to my job at Fort Meade. I like Savage Mill/Ram's Head, I'll have to peruse the maps and see if there's a bike-friendly way to get there from the Fort.

I'm 47, unmarried, also not a serial killer :) also a Maryland transplant, but I've been here a long time. (As in, almost as long as you've been alive.)

I have no transgendered bikes that I know of (but who knows what shenanigans they get up to in the storage room when I'm sleeping????) -- a 2007 Trek 520 steel touring bike (that's the commuter), and 2003/04 Airborne Carpe Diem titanium cyclocross/light touring bike (that's for century rides and such.)

I  beer.

I ride through Savage often on my way South or east. I am up for a beer at Ram's Head some time.

Maxine, from ft meade, leaving from Rockenbach, at the rte 175 intersection, make a left. Go about a little less than 2 miles, and at the light, a little ways past the post office on the left, you want to make a left onto Brockbridge road, follow that to the end, and make a right onto Guilford road. At the very next light, you want to make a left onto Dorsey run Road (overpass over rte 32). On the other side of the overpass, at the intersection across from the Savage train station parking lot, make a right, then make a right again onto Corridor road. Follow Corridor road down to Rte 1 about a mile and 1/2. This is a busy intersection, and you will need to be in the center lane to go across rte 1. Go straight across to Howard St. You are now in Savage. Follow Howard st left onto Baltimore st, and take Baltimore st, all the way to the end and make a left. At this point you can make a right at the end into a large parking lot. You will
need to ride across the parking lot to the bottom, and make a left. This way you will need to meander through savage mall to get to Ram's head. The other way, is instead of turning right into the parking lot, turn left and go about 1/2 mile. On the right will be Savage mill. Rams Head is almost directly back.

There's a Ram's Head Tavern on the eastern shore, too--in Stevensville. This was the launching point for the Severna Park Peloton's OC9 ride (Stevensville to Ocean City) this past May.

See, now, ya gotta keep an eye on this NoRacer character . . . it starts off with an innocent suggestion, and next thing you know, we're all doing a Tour de Rams Head from Laurel to Stevensville. Via Havre de Grace, of course.

Fletchh, thanks for the directions. I have a box in that Annapolis Junction post office, and I've often seen cyclists heading over Route 32 on the Dorsey Road overpass.

I'm up for a group beer, bike or no bike. Work has been insane lately, so mid-week outings might end up being iffy, but so far (knock wood) weekends have been largely free.
