Electric Bikes - BionX: Not as slow as I though it would be after power loss

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

it was a nice evening after work, i was not as tired as usual, daylight was still bright and shinny, so i felt adventurous and went into the deep forest of the parks, rode through some unmapped woods along the routes i usually take, hoping to find a new short cut ;)

as i rode along those off road areas everything was neat and cool, i got to know a lot of places and not so useful short cuts i did not know about.

so after a few hours of riding the sun started to set, and i quickly went to the nearest civilization, it's not as easy as you think, when you are trapped between high hills & cliffs in a mini forest

So after a while i finally found a path back to a human habited route, and proceeded to track down the nearest major intersection / avenue road to get my bearings back.

By the way, GPS TomTom maps, and google maps kinda sucks when you are stuck in middle of a Forest :notamused:

at least they served as a guide to kinda get my bearings, but it was not detailed enough / can't zoom in down enough to see if a path is do-able or not. That's sorta how i ended way up in a cliff :roflmao2:

Thinking hey that's the quickest way to this civilized road... NOT! a chance, LOL

Anyways so after all that i rode home with 2 bars of battery left. No long after half way home the battery completely died out after i got lazy and just pushed the throttle.... (i shouldn't have done that), that chew away the 2 bars quickly going up a steep hill.

So after that the bike became a very heavy brick, or so i though :p i just had to drop a couple of gears, and everything was riding normally again without any drag. i was biking at 20Km/h with the completely dead battery.

Dumb me, i forgot the bike can regen even when not going down hill, LOL  so i lost about 10 Km of good charging time  ... so as soon as i recall about the regen, i just flip the switch to G1, and continued riding, effectively after a few Km later i got 1 bar back.

Unfortunately G2, G3, and G4 makes the bike totally and nearly unbikeable when carrying a dead weight.
Good news is if you have a decent down hill, quickly change to G3, and you can quickly recharge 1 full bar, by going a long down hill on G3, G4 is just too slow for conform, but if you don't mind going at like walking speed on a downhill, then by all means use G4.

G4 should probably get you bar+1/2 if the hill is long enough.

Anyways overall it was very satisfactory, running out of battery is not Doom & Gloom as some people claims it to be.

Translation Regen really works when you need it the most :thumb:

After i get a bar of energy back, i saved every bit of it for the next uphill battle, instead of wasting it on normal stuff :D

Regen sounds like insurance; it really sucks, until you don't have it <g>.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't you have to waste it on normal stuff since you can't really shut the electonics off or the Bionix's drag won't allow you to freewheel without you expending a lot energy?

Drag is actually quite minimal on a powered down BionX. I often run my PL350 on zero assist or regenerative setting G1 (or even G2) on flat stretches with little discomfort or excess effort. G3 or G4 on the downhills is great especially the looks one gets from passing cyclists as I peddle away downhill in a granny gear and get nowhere fast.
In case you're wondering I do that on an '07 Cadenza with 2" Big Apples. :thumb:

It's a sweet ride. I love it.

So the anti-story happened to me today: the human powered side of the machine died. I lost the idler on the crank side so I could no longer pedal. 8 miles home all on battery power, after I used my air pump velcro to keep the chain of the mid-drive sprocket. The looks I got going up hills without pedaling were priceless :roflmao2:

My cruising speed on flat terrain on a road bike is around 21mph. On my bionx bike turned off, it's around 20mph.

On a particular downhill, I can coast up to 33 mph on my road bike. With the bionx bike turned off, I can coast up to about 31 mph on the same downhill.

So the motor is not really that much of drag.

Also, my bionx bike also has wider lower pressure tires (bionx - 32mm 80 psi, road - 23mm 120 psi), so I don't know how much of the additional drag is from the tires.

Charging the bionx while riding on flats or downhills may sound inefficient energy wise -- the energy is going from your foot to the battery -> motor -> wheel instead of foot directly to wheel -- but at least you can avoid riding with a lot of strain. (more aerobic leg work and less anaerobic).

I keep hearing that regen braking is a bunch of hype and the returns are insignificant. I'm happy to hear that it's actually working for folks, and I hope the technology gets even better for cyclists. I actually think it's a VERY cool idea.

no problem at all as you can read from the other people that have posted, and definitely no problem for me.

in fact if you down hill, or want a better freewheeling experience just set it to Zero

else in (A) mode or (G) mode it will engange regen or assist when you don't want to, and that will get you that drag feel you are talking about.

if you keep it at zero you are going at full speed, on your own pedal power.
