This has been discussed a lot recently. You might want to do a search, but the general conclusion was that most of us listen to nature or the road for vehicles, and many feel that earphones are a safety detriment.

Here is a link to the most recent discussion on this topic:

beyond the feeling that headphones aren't safe while riding, it is ILLEGAL in some states to do so.

I prefer the sound of the road, my grunting, and the wimpering of lesser riders as I pass them like nothing...

If I'm on a bike trail and don't need to worry about someone running my arse over, I listen to mostly electronic music around 90 to 120 bpm's. I try to keep my cadence around the beat.

Cheers and if you use headphone on the street, keep the volume down. Too many of us getting hit these days.

My Bike...I don't like not hearing it as I can usually tell what is wrong by sounds.

I agree. A bike can tell you a lot of things about itself just by the sounds it makes. This is actually the case with a lot of mechanical equipment. It's always good to keep an ear out for irregularities in the sound of your machines.

The incredible rush of wind whizzing past my ears at a steady 13.1 mph.

I listen to natures song, the wind blowing, the birds, the car that is trying to cut me off at an intersection that I would have missed listening to music and gotten myself killed. That's what I listen to.

It depends.... I ride with music on days I feel stressed and don't want to deal with motorists. Its easier to blow them off if I have some music going, for whatever reason. On days I do wear phones I have some cheap in ear Sony earphones that cut down a lot on wind noise but I can still hear a car approaching. Besides, my eyes, which do 99% of my piloting, still work fine.

Anyways last time I rode I was listening to AFI, but its usually something kinda aggressive to keep me moving.

Afi rocks to listen too on a ride. I kind of lied above. When I am really pushing my bike I don't listen to music. If I am riding xc or a regular trail I put the ear buds in and listen to anything heavy :)

Since you are going to get all of the religious zealots preaching against them, you should ask, "What do you listen to when you are riding indoors on your trainer."

Like Lady Madonna, I "listen to the music playing in my head."

Oh, damn! Now, I've got a Beatles' tune stuck in my head.

I listen to talk radio/baseball in my right ear on low level. I used to listen to music, but the more I stayed on the road, the less safe I would feel.

I tried it a couple of times, but gave it up because I couldn't hear the traffic coming up behind me, or my bike, or much of anything else.

That was long about nineteen and eighty four, and I was listening to
Thomas Dolby's "Hyperactive" on a Sony Walkman cassette. :p

inoors on a trainer...well if i had a training stand...it would so have to be porn...just because i get to hear grunts that aren't mine :p

On the road or trail...nothing...I'd like to hear if something is wrong on my bike or hear cars coming up behind me.

Well of course I listen to music while riding the trainer otherwise I would go bonkers with boredom.

I dont understand everyones hate for music, why not put one headphone in your right ear and leave the left one open and free?

to properly position sounds and get 3d recognition of sounds, you need both ears.

When I'm riding, if a car that is of normal or louder tone gets within a block of me I already know where it is...no need for a mirror. Now it's those stupid quiet civics and corollas that tick me off. As Yoda would put it : ghost cars they are, mmm!

Not to worry. You live in California which means a good majority of those Civics and Corollas will be riced-out with a big wing, senseless Kanji scrolled across the sides and coffee-can tipped exhaust pipes that make large farting noises... brrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaapppppppppp.

Oldspark,
Henry Gross? geez, I didn't think anyone knew him, let alone remembered
him (well there was that Shannon song).
Particularly liked his first album with Morning Star. . .
