Just getting into road bikes/racing, and the wife and I have been watching the TDF daily.

We are wondering how does everything (i.e. teams, stages, individuals) determine the overall winner?

I guess what I'm trying to ask is what is the purpose of the "team" when each individual is trying to win the overall race?

I apologize for my seemingly naive ignorance, just trying to learn.
