I am in the process of converting my dad's old Ross from the 1980's into a fixed gear. My question is, should I treat this frame as if I were going to paint a car? We have a well equipped shop with just about every imaginable tool for bodywork, and my dad has spent many years restoring cars. I plan on painting it a deep red color we have left over from one of our previous projects, and it will look excellent on this lugged steel frame. I also plan on doing a base coat/clear coat, and as of now I have completely stripped all the old paint off the frame and ground off the cable stops. Will it be necessary to do anything more than give it a final sanding and apply a few coats of primer, sanding in between each coat to remove any scratches? Thanks for the help.

Yes, paint it like car or motorcycle tank. You should be using a touch up gun, not a full size gun. Get the in between and insides of things first. Painting tubes is not the same as painting flat panels. Runs come much more easily.

An old seat post in the frame will give you something to hold it by. You can also weld some big washers to old BB cups and use them to hold onto.
