Okay, so I'm slowly getting back into cycling. Just about to turn 30 and I have about 15 lbs to lose. Whats your suggestion on the quickest/best way to lose the beer gut? z

The figure's roughly 3500 calories per pound. If you can be on a deficit of 500 calories a day plus ride a little more on weekends, you can easily lose 2-3 pounds a week. It'll take about a month, a little less if you really get into cycling. Try jogging a little too, to add some variety. I lost 7 pounds in about a month without even realizing it after I got my road bike and all I did was bike 2-3 hours every morning on weekends and all that time I was eating MORE than what I had been eating before.

Just get out and bike! :)

Ride a lots miles as often as possible, like maybe daily. Include hills too.

Apart from the obvious: eat less and exercsie more, I get best results when I cut right down on fat intake. You may already know that an ounce of fat has 2.2 times the calories of an ounce of carbohydrate or protein, therefore it's the easiest way to cut your energy intake.

Most people are unaware of all the fat they eat, so try to analyze what you're eating
so you can find the hidden fats.

Commute to work.

That's what did it for me to the tune of about 25 pounds in 3 or 4 months. Two built in workouts each day will boost your metabolism and burn some serious calories.

That is funny. I remember a couple Christmas' ago the whole family was together. Somebody said to me, "you're puttin on a little weight there aren't ya?" Yeah, i had to agree. "It's all that beer, said my Dad."

I said i didn't think beer was the cause. Come to find out I was right. (like normal. :p ) The following February, after that conversation, i started a low fat diet and switched to diet soda. I started to lose around 1 lb per week and by the end of March i had lost around 20 lbs. I soon went from 197 lbs to around 165. I was not exercising at all. I sort of leveled off there and then decided to start running every night. I did this and lost more weight. I went down to around 158 or so.

In August I got a bike and have gone nuts ever since. I am now putting on 20-30 miles a day and can PROMISE you, that i have NO gut at all. As a matter of fact, i don't have any fat anywhere. I am a lean mean cycling machine. Now the same family members keep telling me i am too thin.

I do look pretty thin in dress clothes. In a swimming suit they will be forced to reconsider since they will all have junk hanging over their belts. And I look like an athelete. :D (6'2" 148 lbs. today, same as my High School weight 17 years ago. ;) )

BTW, I still have a few beers. I'm also still on the diet. Probably always will be. No fast food, no beef, nothing high in fat. Beer has 0 grams of fat, so does so many other things you wouldn't believe.

Take a good look at your lifestyle and identify when you tend to eat snack foods. Try to schedule riding at those times so you have something else to do. That way, you increase expenditures at the same time you decrease consumption.

Stop consuming beer, regular soda, pizza, chips, and anything fried.

Leave your car keys at work and get used to riding you bike everywhere.

One thing that I find helps is to become accountable for what you eat. Check out

It's a way for you to track your daily eating and exercise and see if you are actually creating a calorie deficit. Plus, if you're like me, it makes you less likely to break down and drink that cherry coke or eat that twinkie when you know you'll have to enter it into your log.

Ride your bike to work every day.
Run 2-3 times a week for at least 30 minutes.
Continue to drink beer without regret.

i'm kinda trying to loose weight too.. i'm a little under 190, and should be around 165. All it took was one lousy semester with all my time spent in labs. I just got a bike messenger gig, so that should cut some fat. but i'll tell you right now.. i will NEVER put down a cherry coke.

I think I'm gonna just start riding my butt off and get addicted to it. Can't stop drinking the cold beer, especically in the summer. z

Eat right, watching your fat intake, and cut beer intake to a minimum ( it's easy to consume hundreds of empty calories with beer.) ... and Ride, Ride, Ride.

Just like you were taught in grade school ... "Eat right, and Exercise" .

so is drinking wine really preferable to bear from a health standpoint? i love wine. i could drink gallons of it. also, i always feel good after drinking wine. beer leaves me dehydrated and in pain. doesn't wine have sugar in it to help fermentation? is it just not much sugar?

In a weight-loss thread when someone posts
i love wine. i could drink gallons of it.

That sure makes our jobs easier to give advice on where to cut calories. =)
