other than the obvious, which is I guess they stay up on you better. I have been wearing shorts, but local bike shop has last year bibs on sale. opinions and preferences?

Since there is no elastic band around the waist, they're way more comfortable than regular bike shorts.

Yup, you don't have that rubberized waist band on the bibs. They are a bit warmer due to the extra material, but that is a good thing when it's cooler.

Kucharik Clothing makes a line of recumbent clothing, including bib shorts. The non-bib recumbent shorts have no padding, so I assume that is also true of the bib shorts.

I only wear bibs now. I have about 6 pr shorts but don't use them. The bibs are just so much more comfortable and on a trike you move around on the seat they stay in place where regular shorts slide up & down.

I wore my "couple of years old" Performance Elite Bibs on the ride today. Didn't even notice they had any padding. Of course, I never noticed any padding when using them on my upright, either.

It helps to have a large bladder, especially in cold weather, with bibs.

The key to pee -ing with bibs is to bend over, so that there is some slack in the front of the garment and you can pull it down enough to do the deed. The required position is very awkward if you're actually in a bathroom, but not a problem when I water the weeds.
Of course, you could also take off you're jersey and lower the straps... :p

The problem is with the "need" to get undressed and riding 200+ miles. I love my bibs but...12 AM on a 400K ride and its wet out and undoing my layers is a beast for an adled brain. But love the way I look in them.

i got a bent so I didn't have to ride with the goofy getups. i wear the starter compression shorts from wal mart with underarmour shorts and a nice sleeveless shirt. Other than the back pain, wearing the spandex was the worst thing about riding a DF

Why bend over to make room or give slack. The elastic in the legs stretch very easy.

I love bibs for their comfort and I simply remove the padding. It comes out easily and it means that I do look like some kind of freak when off the bike. I find it much better without the padding when on the bike too. I still find toilet breaks difficult, and I have no alternative to taking off the jersey and rolling down the bibs, but I guess that it's a function of the style and cut that makes urinating easy.
