Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - Schwinn Traveler

I just got a Schwinn Traveler for $35.00. It looks to me like nothing on the bike is origional except for the frame itself. It has Dia Compe 500 brakes. Suntour ARX shifters. Sugino BT Pedals. Cro Moly 4130 main tubes. 700C Araya wheels. Specialized tires. Step-thru frame. Cruiser saddle and handle bars, but the saddle post is not steel some kind of alloy or aluminum. The handle bars are also some kind of alloy or alluminum. A magnet won't stick to either the saddle post or the handle bars. It weighs 25lb. Pictures will come soon. I don't know much about cycling but I do know that this bike should not have these componets. What is it actually worth? I know the componets are pretty good but beyond that I'm clueless.

Just and update, I found that the handle bars are Sineli.

Post pictures. Step through frames have limited value around here. People want mixte frames instead. Some years the Traveler was a mixte frame. Without a picture, I can't speculate which you have.

Are you sure the derailleurs are Suntour ARX? This bike came with Suntour AR derailleurs in the 1983/1984 /1985 timeframe with Diacompe 500 brakes.

I would suggest you look at the Schwinn catalogs on line, and you will determine exactly what year you have.

The Traveler was a lower end bike, but well worth the price you paid for sure.

Yes I am sure that the shifters are Suntour ARX. Does that have any signifigance?

I'm still kinda new to this. I understand some things and not others. Is a mixte just mean that the frame is not step-thru or is there more to that term. And what about RD. What does that mean? What about the componets. Are they valuable? Would it be worth any effort to put them on another bike if I found a better frame?

A traditional Mixte frame has 2 slim frame tubes that run from the steering head, are attached to the sides of the seat tube, and are then attached to the rear dropouts.

The design is stronger than a traditional "women's" or step through design. The reason for the name Mixte is that it is supposed to be a frame that is usable by both men and women.

Inspect the head badge and determine if a 4 digit code is stamped onto it. This will help determine the model year and then isolate a component listing.

Yours does indicate a Taiwan built frame and being now set as a tourist style rider, you may find it more desired as a path rider. The color and paint condition appears very good, is it?

I checked the head badge and it says 1274. What does this mean? There seems to be no rust on the bike at all. A few scratches here and there on the top tube but that's it. Now I have run into a problem though. This morning I took it out for a ride to put it through its paces and the crank is doing this tick tick clunk sound, but the crank isn't loose that I can tell.

I think I might have hurt it last night. I was going to take it out for a short spin and as I was walking it out to the road I twisted my ankle in a hole and fell and so did my bike with me. Well after I walked the pain out of my ankle I rode it for a bout 2 miles and I didn't hear any noises from the crank. I wonder if I knocked something loose when I fell?

Overall its a very nice bike in good condition. $150-175 in Tampa. Without checking the catalog I'm going to say its all original with the exception of the tires, seat and possibly handlebars. Thats OK, a big comfy seat and upright bars add to marketability.

A Traveler is mid-level is Schwinns lineup; Sprint, World, World Sport, Traveler so its only reasonable to expect those components.
