Professional Cycling For the Fans - Professional Cyclers-how much to they make

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

How much does the average cycler make. Not Lance but a guy that just makes his money from riding and no endorsement.

I spent considerable time a few yrs ago tracking down prize money in the T d F and some of the numbers
are a bit soft, such as stage wins good for E 5000 or so, primes on certain mountain tops of E 1k but most
are less. More solid and surprising were the the other prizes: GC E400,000 Team E 50,000
Green E 50,000 Polka a bit less, and Youth about half, cant recall now. Only the GC amounts to real money. No info on 2d 3d etc prize levels, and these amounts are about 5-6yrs old. US Pro team members
make considerably less than the majors in Europe. The real money for a lot of these guys is in appearance
fees for criteriums in small towns all over Europe where the crits are part of some town festival. These can
be $10-25k depending on the name recognition. Track guys used to have similar sources of income. Staged
track races (runners, not cyclists) get appearance fees for showing up. Carl Lewis got rich doing this back in the '80s.
Some domestic US Pros make little more than minimum wage.

Really? That much? Before or after they deduct costs and training expenses?

Here's (http://www.cyclingtipsblog.com/2009/02/pro-team-structure-what-does-it-all-mean/) info on salaries for UCI professional riders.
The prizes for the TDF are found in the middle pages of this (http://www.letour.fr/2009/TDF/COURSE/docs/reglement_fr_us.pdf) document.

And I was going to turn pro. Heck with that.
What are common salaries for US continental teams. Not pro continental. There is no UCI minimum salaries but I would think that the bigger continental teams would have to pay 20,000 a year salaries or so. Small teams probably only pay for some travel expenses and race fees.

If you don't get paid, you're not pro. (I don't know if USAC has a definition for pro or not, but if it's not a job, you're not a professional.)
