I'm just back in NC from Indiana and leaving in a few minutes to head to the Beach. Will do a little TT training and hopefully several rounds of golf..........plus seafood.

My wife and I met PAlt in Terre Haute-had a terrific supper the night before and got all prepped for the ride the next day. My nephew's wife also rode and they met us for supper as well.

PAlt can provide more details but he and I had a good and safe ride. Perfect weather for riding. Temps were probably in the 60's all day and tailwinds for all but just 10-12 miles.

The ride is 160 miles and starts in Terre Haute, In and finishes in Richmond, In near the Ohio border. However there was only about 3000 ft of climbing. Sweet!!

Sounds like there were 1000-1200 riders. PAlt and I went out with the front group and I managed to ride with them for 35 miles. I could have stayed longer but I remembered there were 125 miles to go......I was able to ride with groups most of the way up to 110 miles. I was solo from 110 to about 135 miles. However I met my wife on the side of the road at 115+ miles and drank a 12oz can of Coke. That kicked in just at the right time.

Then a fellow came by me motoring pretty good and I jumped on his wheel. We rode together (I helped as much as I could) for most of the way to the finish and were cruising along anywhere from 22-30 mph-and picked up or passed a few others on the way in. That was an exhilirating way to finish 160 miles!!

My total time including the 2 stops was 7hrs 25 mins and I finished around 50th-might even have been 49?? Gotta give a big thumbs up to the Prince......Average speed was 21.5 mph I think. It felt like a 160 mile time trial as I was very conscious of pedaling all the way around plus my cadence for much of the day-especially when I was solo.

For the first time my Garmin 705 messed up (auto pause and resume while I'm still moving)....and I didn't realize it but I lost 5 miles in the first 91 miles. My Garmin showed 86 miles and all of a sudden I'm at the 91 mile lunch break.......while I didn't like the Garmin messing up it's a boost being 5 miles further along that you realize!!

I have not looked at my splits but I do know we averaged 25 mph for the first 25 miles.

I saw two wrecks. The first was within a few miles of the start when a good rider was laying in the middle of the road and not moving. It looked like a broken collarbone and probably a concussion while I was whizzing by. Most likely wheels touching and being slammed to the ground. We were going 30+ at that spot.

The second accident was just bizarre. I was in a group of 12 and the 4th one back. We came to a T intersection and made a left. The lead rider gave the all clear so we all rolled through the stop sign and made a left. A cyclist just out doing a Saturday morning ride came flying into the intersection from the left as only 2/3 of us got through. One of the fellow crashed trying to avoid the fellow-he was okay and in fact continued on riding with us.

Here's a link to a video my nephew took. PAlt and I ride by in the far lane at about the 36 second mark. He's wearing an Orange jersey/white helment and on a Titanium Bike and I have a green jersey/blue helment and of course a red bike. We're side by side.

Tailwinds on an organised ride are unheard of so how did you manage it?

Never realised how long it takes 1,000 riders to pass- but at least you were away in the front 20%. Will have to watch the vid again to try and spot you- but I dare say you were too fast to catch.

But great ride- great company and a great day.

160 miles is quite an achievement. Good going. Although you credit the bike - I credit the legs...

Hey jppe, with all those mile your putting on the Prince maybe you'll want to get rid of it by seasons end. If so PM me. Nice ride clip.:thumb:

Nice day for a hard ride. Not hot 'n' humid like it usually is mid-July.
Just for clarification - did the Saturday morning rider have the right-of-way at the T-intersection or did he also go through a stop sign?

The Sat morning rider had the ROW. The guy out front just did not see him coming into the intersection. Gotta wonder what that says.

Probably not expecting to see a cyclist coming from another direction.

I was on my way to work, and came in behind the lead group between US 240 and Stilesville on US40. (I live in Greencastle, just a few miles from US40) Outside of Stilesville, there was a line of 10-20 riders apparently copying the photos from the TdF and taking a piss on the side of the highway. Nice.
There were 2 bikes in a "breakaway" a mile ahead of everyone else.... a guy on a Trek in a full team kit, and a couple on an old 90s Cannondale tandem.

I looked for ncvwnut in the lead group, but I didn't see him.

OK, jppe had the afterburners on...not far behind him though. Garmin gave me 7hrs, 25min ride time, 3884ft of climb ('taint no Mt Mitchell), 21.5mph average, and 90rpm avg. cadence. I did manage a personal best at the century mark of 4hr, 36min. Not sure what my total ride time was, will have to wait to see what they post, but it should come in 7hr 40min +/-.

As jppe mentioned, total number of riders for the event was at least 1295. We roll by at about the 36 sec. mark on the video his nephew posted. We went out in the front of the crowd, but maneuvering thru a pack that large is still a challenge. Past years we would have had a police escort thru Terre Haute, as well as traffic control thru each intersection in town. None of that this year, guess budget constraints are biting everyone. Weather was almost perfect, a bit cool at the start for July in Indiana, think it was a record low at 55deg. (had arm warmers on for about 75mi). I managed fluids and food well, made one stop at the 66mi. point for water. My SAG missed our prearranged hand up, so I lost a bit of time trying to locate them !

Here we are at the finish, satisfied with our efforts, a bit tired none the less. I was happy to have him join me in a great accomplishment for ALL those who completed the ride.

Very nice, I am impressed with both of your times too.
I did a century last week and 66 this past weekend so I did what you did in two days and you took 7 and a half hours , wow.
Thanks for posting.
