Well... I was given a small old Raleigh awhile ago (Im 5'1") and Ive slowly been upgrading and in the process trying to learn about bikes. Ive repainted (from teal to black) and replaced many old parts (w a pink sugino crank set & such). Currently its a single speed but I just acquired some new wheels (which Im super stoked about!!) and Im in the process of converting to a fixed gear.

Cool. Be careful in Houston; I think it's one of the less bike-friendly cities in the state.

Depending on area... yes. But there are PLENTY of very bikeable areas.

EDIT: huh... I typed that before seeing your reply... but hopefully firetrucks don't run over girls everywhere in houston :D

I haven't had any problems - I take back roads - pay attention - and never trust drivers.
