Bicycle Mechanics - Help with freehub removal

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
On my last MTB ride I noticed there was some drag in the rear wheel. While doing the cleanup and maintenance I decided to grease the hubs. Upon taking out the axle the freehub fell off and this is what is left. I have taken off all the parts I can but can not get the rest off. From looking at it it should just screw off but I can't get it to budge. I tried letting oil soak in the threads for 24 hrs. but still can't get it to move. Any suggestions or tips before I break down and take it to the LBS. :(

Bertt,
In fact, I think only part of your freehub mechanism fell off, the "knobbly" part protruding upwards of the hub flange is actually where the ratchet pawls for the freewheel mechanism are (were) located and above that, of course, the axle. If you remove the axle -undo the cone & locknut on one side- and look down, there is a fixing screw that will accept an allen key. This will enable you to remove the rest of the freehub mechanism from the hub shell& rest of the wheel. It should be possible to obtain and fit a new freehub and re-mount the old gear cassette on it if you can remove it from the remains of the old parts.
The Barnetts manuals (available at the top of this section of the forums) have much more detail on the maintainence of freehub & related parts.
Good luck,
Ed
