I race cx and road. This season, I got a small chip in my Zipp 404 tubular wheel that I had a carbon repair shop fix. Because the process took so long, I bought a replacement front 404 tubular during the season and no longer need the repaired rim. Since it has been repaired, I can't really sell it for much money, so I was thinking about using it for cx. I currently have a Specialized Tricross with Mud 2 clinchers on their stock Roval Classique Pavé wheels.

Question: Is it worth it to throw on the old/repaird Zipp 404 with a Evo CX Tubular on it? If so, could I go with a 700x34 or would I be better off getting a 700x32 which is the size of the rear Mud 2?

Note: I don't have additional funds to get a rear 404 to match, and I am not interested in using my road race wheel either. Question is whether or not anyone on the forum would use it on the front or just leave it as is and let the old Zipp that has been repaired flawlessly sit in my garage or in the pit never to be used.

I can't speak to the usage of a Zipp but I run a front tub on my SS because the rear is an ENO hub. I personally think that front matters a little more for traction.

But at the back, it matters lots for not getting pinch flats and for not getting bounced around....

I think your idea is a good one. You might think about buying some brake pads that will work ok with both metal and carbon rims like Swissstop Yellows. I'd probably get the 34c tread if your area is dry most of the winter.

I think a rear tubular will make more sense than a front.

But since you have it, might as well run it. Tire recommendation would vary on where you ride.

I am thinking about doing this too. My rear wheel is dt swiss with white ind hub and I don't wanna rebuild it for a tubular.

Let us know what you think when you try it.

Anyone ever use a tubular clincher? This might solve the issue.
