Northeast - Police Warning for No Helmet

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
In Massachusetts, a police officer issued a warning to my wife for not wearing a helmet. She was just biking a mile down the street on a low traffic side street. Regardless, I thought helmets were not required by law unless you are under 12 years old. Can anyone confirm? Whats the best way to educate a police officer about this?

If you put this up in Advocacy and Safety, you'll probably get a better response, it gets more traffic than this forum.

Unless they changed the law and didn't tell us, adults don't have to wear a helmet in MA

How old is your wife? In the part of the country I grew up in, well lets just say... Lets not, actually, but you get the idea.

16 or under. Unless she looks youthful, I'd say that he probably just wanted to stop her to check her out and used that for an excuse (i.e. that she should use a helmet)...LOL.
