I know, I know, but I can't find this info anywhere I looked.

My front dérailleur cable on my 105 STI keeps coming loose. I am not sure if I have the cable attached to the right spot. Does the inner cable go between the screw and the washer (on the dérailleur, not the lever), or under the washer next to the arm?

It seems my cable is starting to fray (I pinched it so tight I snapped a coupe of strands).

Also, I'm trying to true a wheel and it seems the spoke I need to tighten is seized to the nipple and when I twist, I'm afraid I will break the spoke. I put some penetrating oil on it this morning ......and suggestions if the oil does not work?

Thanks,

ehenz

The cable goes between the washer and the arm of the derailleur. There should be a small indentation on the arm that it fits into. As for the spoke, if the oil doesn't loosen it, cut it with a good wire cutter and replace it.

Thats some REALLY bad advice to cut a spoke. I have seen too many spokes fly clear across the shop because someone cut them without first loosening it all the way. Definately wear eye protection and hold wheel with the spoke you're cutting facing down and away from you should you NEED to cut the spoke.

Are you sure the spoke isn't already at its maximum tension? If the wheels have been trued repeatedly, especially if they were trued by someone who isn't quite as experienced or professional, often times the wheels will get "tensioned out" where you just run out of threads after so many times on the truing stand.

If you put a shop rag over the nipple in question and cut close to the nipple, it won't go anywhere. The j bend won't let the rest of the spoke fly away, but I always wear safety glasses anyway. My regular glasses have ansi + lenses, since I do a lot of work in construction areas.
