General Cycling Discussion - bike tuneup?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. i have a mtn bike. when i try and accelerate i get a creaking sound from the rear. wheel seems to spin fine when i have it mounted in a stand. gears shift fine. no sound like something is rubbing. bike is 18yrs old. never been adjusted or tuned up. i ride a lot. i wonder if a tuneup would have any affect on the seemingly nice ride?
It is well overdue. Expect a hefty repair bill.

If you are really lucky, the LBS will be able to get the seatpost out and add grease.
it just needs a minor adjustment here and there. i like to ride slow and i listen to noisy bikes that pass me and wonder what the heck is wrong with their bikes? my bike is very quiet. i figure if it seems to do everything well than why assume something is wrong? it rolls fine, shifts fine, stops fine. no wheel pulsations. no bent rims. hefty repair bill? for what?
