General Cycling Discussion - Does anyone know of any cyclists campaigns against car tinted windows in the UK

I've finally had enough and want to find like minded people to see just how much of a problem this is. I have nearly been wiped out on three occasions, once today, whilst witnessing a marked increase in the amount of cars displaying blatantly illegal windscreens ...or windshields and side windows. Why aren't these people being nicked?

Priority. Where do you really want the government spending your taxes? Checking for illegally tinted windows or finding real criminals? Just curious. I agree that the window tinting thing has gotten out of hand, but really...

Some of the cops here in the US carry light meters to measure car tinting. I have only heard of two times that they ever use the meters.

1) When they stop the car for speeding or something else and the driver is being a pain. Then they start looking for things to tack onto the ticket, and window tinting is normally a easy target for the generally young men with an attitude problem.

2) The window is so dark that the cop can not see the driver in broad daylight with a bright back lightning from the far side window.

In general, they are not going to waste the time pulling someone over when they are not committing a moving violation just to write them a ticket for dark windows.

Around here, some of the cruisers have the windows tinted so dark, you can't tell if the cop is in the car or not.

Auto glass tinting is regulated because the police need to see inside at a traffic stop. To impare the driver's vision they would have to be really dark. My state only allows the top 4" of windshield to be tinted. The darkness of the sides and rear are not enforced.

In many places, they are not allowed to pull you over just for tint. Same way they can't pull you over for a seatbelt. They must have a primary reason to pull you over; tint and seatbelts just get tacked on. Not that it's difficult for them to FIND a reason to pull you over.

That said, what does this have to do with cycling? Just more general car hate?
Tint hardly impairs driver vision. Driver awareness is a much better choice of what to get riled up about.

Just a thought, but...

a) poor driver visibility - they can't see you.

b) poor cyclist vision - you can't see driver to tell if they are looking or to make eye contact.

Always assume they can't see you. Basic defensive riding skills. Much safer that way...
