Commuting - Do you use the drive-thru?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Had errands to do at lunch today and was asked to stop by the bank to pick up change for the afternoon. I really didn't feel like having helmet head and locking up my bike so I used the drive-thru. Nice conversation with the biker b**** in the other line who asked about my milage ( 1 liter water per 5 miles, YMMV) and the teller didn't even blink! Anyone had problems or is this usual?
It sounded like they were just making conversation. I always joke my mileage is something like 100 calories per mile.

Yep, I go through the drive through at the bank, at the local ice cream joint, and one of the coffee shops on the way to work (sometimes).
The tellers and employees never seem to mind, but I occasionally get honked at or yelled at by some idiot in a cage who just can't seem to wait for me to go about my business.

I've never had a problem with using a variety of drive ups in the US, but I've heard stories of some businesses not allowing it. One thing I'd caution you is to be on the look out for puddles of grease and oil left by idling cars. It can really, really, slippery.

Amazing, considering that you should be no faster or slower than the motorists in a drive though. I guess some folks have such sad lives they can't help bearing ill will toward everyone.

i had the same problem with taking my bike with me into a one person at a time bathroom. all the people in line yelled at me. this psychological phenomenon really needs to be explored. it's just flat out weird... and common too.

How the heck do you guys get to trigger whatever sensor that tells the drive thru guy - "a (car) is here serve me now" message?

I use them all over town & never had any guff from anyone. Some of the drive thru have a call button & most have a cheerful employee who is on top of things, never had a problem with not getting attention right away.

One could use one's voice.
Having said that, I've never had any reason to go anywhere near a drive-thru on my bike. I simply don't eat at places like Chew & Spew or any of the other greasy "fast-food" joints. Most of my banking is done on the Internet (and banks around here don't have drive-thru's anyway), so I simply haven't bothered to do it.

OH NO! I hadn't thought about the local ice cream joint or the coffee bar! They have drive thru and are on my way to work. Good bye thinner thighs. Now I just need to fashion a coffee cup holder on the handle bars....
The local Bikers (as in motorcycle) have been good about sharing the road with me. Wish I could say that about the RNBs (redneck boys for the culturally impaired).

Gee, here in Queensland we're pretty culturally impaired, but there are no shortage of rednecks around here.
