Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - portland bike thief caught - feel good thread

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Today I was sitting outside of Safeway smoking a cigarette while a kid about my age was unlocking his bike. I complemented how rad his bike was and he told me an awesome story.
It had been stolen about 10 days ago. He found his bike on Craigslist and called the cops. The cops followed him to the house where the transaction was to take place. The kid got his bike back, the dude got arrested and 14 other stolen bikes were retrieved and returned to their owners. ****ing badass.

Thanks for telling us. On my local community messageboard, we were wondering if someone would have the chutzpah to post a stolen bike on craigslist. My contention is that it's rare, and you've proven that it happens at least sometimes.

Thank god for craigslist.
a buddy of mine out here had his bike stolen about two months ago, and about two weeks ago it popped up on craigslist. he and 3 friends went to get it back, and the thief had set up a meeting spot across the street from a police station. they flagged down a cop and got the bike back. stoked.

would you honestly kill someone over something material and replacable like a bike?

Nice that's great news to hear. Whenever I do a transaction on Craigslist, whether buying or selling, I am always sure to get a "title" for it (or give one). Include the serial number etc. to ensure that if anything happens, YOU have proof that you did not steal it and vice verse.

I had to stop watching after I realized how dumb the people MAKING the video were. The main question the kept asking is "Why would you buy a bike?"
WTF? Why would you buy a bike? Why not? Because I wanted it? Leave the interrogation to the cops, son.

I feel a little bit safer about locking my bike up in downtown now with one less person trying to rip off my bike.
