Whats the main difference between the WEINMANN DP18 deep V's and the Velocity deep V's. There's about $100 price difference. Weight? They're both laced on formula hubs.
Are the velocity wheels worth the extra cash?
Thanks

Weinmann's are notorious for shoddy workmanship. The seams on them tend to seperate/split with time. Spend the extra money and get Velocities.

Weinmann's are much heavier, but damn near bulletproof. Velocity's are lighter. That's about it, I believe.

You probably won't be racing with either, so go with the Weinmanns.

I;ve heard of wienmanns breaking at the seams, but that might just be some FUD that I heard a while ago.

Weinmanns are garbage, they're workmanship is not nearly as good as the Velocities

there is a slight shape difference in regards to the non-machined versions of each wheel, that is to say the non-machined Velocity has a smoother sidewall. Other than that, there are tons of threads dedicated to the specific benefits and drawbacks of each wheel.
i have DP18's, and i love them.

I have both. If you compare them side by side then you can see the difference. The sidewall of the weinmann protrudes out and the velocity doesn't. They both feel the same to me. So flip a coin or get the weinmanns.

I've had both, and both are great as far as durability. Supposedly the Deep-V is a bit lighter, and I prefer the smoother sidewall, looks-wise.

I've had a bad accident with the velocitys and they stood up with brely any scratches done to them, so I can stand behind them being very very strong. I have heard good and bad thing about Weinmanns and my brother uses them, but as far as durability, he has yet to have a time to where durability is an issue (thankfully).

I have yet to ride any velocity rims, but I do own Weinmann dp18's. They've held up great so far and really haven't ever had any issues with them. Personally I'd keep the $100 and upgrade something else on your bike.

Those are our "Tessa" Wheels- actually it is a Weinmann DP18 with our decals. They have formula hubs & stainless spokes.

Julian's are different- more like the working man's H-Plus (oh did I really say that?). They are much deeper (they are 42mm) than the DP18 or Deep-V, but 1mm short of the B-43!

Weinmanns look and feel cheap. Heavier too. Velocitys are worth the stretch.

does anyone know if you can buy weinmann dp-18's as just a rim? i've never seen it, but i've bought and built up 2 sets of deep v's... one set of rims was $100 and one was $140... retail...
there shouldn't be a $100 price difference between a set of wheels built with those rims with the same spokes and same hubs. if there is $100 difference, you are either paying for the velocity name, or you are paying for a better build.

At least not the rim anyways. I personally weighed the Deep v's and DP18's at the shop. Identical weight.
it's been discussed on the forums plenty of times.

What you are paying for is a rim that is made in Australia vs a rim made in China. That is a big difference!

^yeah but not a 66% cost difference... i could see a $50 difference on $140 rims, but not $100. i would never buy a set of rims that were worth $40 retail...

I wouldn't even worry about the weight difference (if there *really* is one). You're probably going to put on super baddazzz skidding tires anyway that will weigh about eleventy billion pounds each.
And like any wheel: if you don't build it yourself or have it hand built, ride it to let the spokes settle in, then true it up or have someone do it for you. For my money, wheel strength / durability is in the build more than the materials --- at least at this level of equipment.
So just get the Weinmanns and spend the savings on beer. Your liver will thank you.

Wha? I think you got those mixed up...I vote for deep V's if you look hard enough or hang out at your lbs enough, you might cop a deal, thats what I did...also I don't know anyone with DP's that doesn't regret it

Depends on where you will be riding, street conditions etc. DOnt wanna get the flimsier wheelset if your city doesnt fill in potholes. Heh

How easily do the decals come off on those Julian rims?

I would only pay top dollar for US made. The exceptions would Italy and France b/c of their cycling tradition and Germany b/c of their engineering reputation.

well im a 220 pound monster of a reckless cyclist, and those Aussie *******s have kept me rolling around for about 2 years now no problems... mega pot holes! and one car accident... i can stand by them id say.. But i have never had DP18's so i cant really give a fair judgment..
