We also had our CC canceled last month due to fraudulent charges. It appears had my name and cell phone number. We found out about it when the checker at our local grocery store said our card authorization wouldn't go through.
As many seniors do, we live our life on credit - when we run out of it we will simply have our last glass of wine and walk into the ocean. I had hoped that it was going to a bit longer, but the checker gave us a real wake-up call.
I had recently shopped at the Nashbar site and deduced that it might be the problem, but from what the referenced web site describes, it was likely previous purchases from their website since the theft apparently happened in Dec 2008.
In our case, the "thieves" were not all that smart. They placed six orders for diet pills and had them sent to us!!! They even ordered something from China; more pills I think - we refused the mail delivery. They did change my name on one of the orders. The only items they ordered that we didn't receive were two sets of business cards.
The biggest pain was re-directing all our 'auto-pays' to the new card, or to an alternate card, since some of the payments were due in a day or two. Based on this experience, we will not be ordering anything online in the future. That's unfortunate because some items are just not available in the local bike stores.
ADD: I have received zero info from Nashbar regarding this problem.

If you're saying that "zomg someone who used Nashbar got their credit card # stolen," that kind of thing happens all the time. I haven't ordered from Nashbar in months, yet two of my cc's got compromised. Usually it's the cc processor (which aggregates millions of numbers) that gets nailed rather than the store.

Could well be the case, but there would be no reason for the processor to have my phone number and it (slightly modified - likely by the "thief" to insure I wasn't called - was on one invoice) so I'd bet on the Nashbar database being the one that what was hacked.
On the currently 'down' Bent website, two folks mentioned that their CC's had been hit for airplane tickets to the Middle East. Our account got off easy.
Be careful when ordering from Nashbar.

I have a seperate card just for internet ordering,very low limit so they dont get much if something like this happens.

I just got a letter from Nashbar's CEO describing that their systems had been hacked and credit card info stolen. The first intrusions happened in Dec. 08. They didn't find out until May 09. They notified their customers in July 09. Very very poor IT security procedures, if you ask me. I have zero confidence in doing business with them now.

Have to agree. I didn't get a letter from Nashbar until this Monday 7/27!!!
Sounds like they were slow to react to user complaints, slow to find out what was going on and VERY slow to inform their customer base. Definitely a defensive strategy (containment) - like many politicians seem to use.
I do like the idea of using one credit card specifically for Internet purchases - will likely institute that action. Sometimes, things I desire to purchase are available only online. Don't want to give up that convenience.

You can even use one credit card per transaction. Several companies including Citi provide this service. You generate a unique credit card number that is good for one transaction (with amount and time limit). If hackers get it, it is useless.
That's how I have done all my online purchases in the last 7 years.
