Ladies and Gentlemen,

Yes, it's on again, the annual virtual TdF. This is the chance for those of us who ride in the real world to show those imposters in France a thing or two! The challenge is two-fold. Firstly, to see who can ride the most miles/kilometres in the three weeks of the tour, and secondly to see who can ride the full distance of 3,400-odd km (I'll post the exact distance when I have time to look it up) this evening. As a special treat, this year we are teaming up with the boys (and gals) over at http://www.activebody.org so that we can log the miles and see just where we all sit in the challenge. We'll also have a polka-dot jersey for those of us with gravity-defying fetishes.

Further details can be found here (http://www.activebody.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=102), and the standings will appear here (http://www.activebody.org/challenge_tdf.php) when the tour itself starts. As usual, anyone who can ride the 3,400-odd km in the three weeks wins a no-expenses paid holiday in Murwillumbah - the political, economic, social and cultural hub of the known universe!

Just an update from my earlier post, the total distance of the tour is 3,390km. Route information is available on the tour page at www.cyclingnews.com.

Hey everyone,

If you don't know me I'm the guy that did activebody.org. I'm really excited to host this on the activebody web site this year for you all (as well as the other activebody users)!

One small note beyond what Chris said below... The ability to view the standings (and also add miles) you will need a free account on the website. You can do that here:

http://www.activebody.org/add_new_user.php

If you feel like joining the Bike forums team you can find that info in my sig below.

Good luck and have fun!

The activebody.org site rocks! If you haven't joined up yet to log your rides, do so you'll thank yourself.

It's too bad the TDF challange wasn't in June though as I log most of my miles in that month. Oh well...Good luck everyone and have fun!!!

Im in... I hope to get a few metric centuries in this coming week. I have not had time to add distances to activebody.org for a while, so my total distance is done a fair bit. but the amount in the challenge should be pretty accurate.

I will even install a computer on my MTB commuter to count the measly 2km commute!
Starting distance on ODO: 2,117km. Finishing reading: 5,507km.

and in the main frame window where im guessing the TDF challenge is suposed to show...:The query failed! table_name must be a valid table name that exists in the database specified in mysql_select_db 1

Ummmm yea ill change my training plan right away to accomadate this challenge. for real though, i myself would think it be better idea who rides the most miles in the least amount of time to simulate the TDF.but since it's not a challenge in the "REAL" world where no cheating can take place, ill stick to my racing schedule for true results, good luck lady's and gents.

PS, funny how the guy logging the most miles would come up with this idea,i wonder if hes at the top in the GC in USCF races localy.

"USCF" and "locally" in the same sentence. Just a slight contradiction in terms in this part of the world.

Would you be able to keep the Abody.org challenge up long enough to see a top 10 of finishers? basically leave it until 10 people have finished? just from a logging perspective, cause I see that it only runs for the duration of the tour.

Brendon
PS It works now.

I haven't been able to get active body.org to come up in two days! Am I the only one with this problem? Seems to have occured after I signed up for the weather option. I can't get on to enter my miles. :(

I really like this. Maybe because I am currently in the yellow, I think that like the real Tour de France I am merely keeping it warm for now though. Chris is sure to do an epic ride and crush me anyday now! :)

Thanks to Chris for suggesting it, and to Clint for setting up such a great site!

One more day guys (maybe a little less).

The way I'm going to do the cut off is when lance wins in France. I'm in eastern (US) time zone so when ever that time is in your city... make sure you have your miles in by then...

Good luck and keep the miles going...

The 2005 challenge has been posted on Activebody.org (just as last year)

Log in and start posting your miles and see how far you can make it by the end of July!

Wow! Have you saw the guy with 759 miles in 5 days? That's around 150 miles per day! That's a lot of miles!

Okay, just to see how schooled I'd be, I signed up for this thing (ok, it's really just because I just bought a computer and can actually track miles and I'm chronically bored) but what is the final goal for miles? According to the site I'm at 5.1% after riding over the weekend, but I don't feel like doing the math to figure out what that comes out too...

total is the total number of miles in the tour this year... should be at the top of the page challenge page.

Thanks for trying it out!

Wow, you must have a bunch more miles than me - I've just been trying to stay in the top 20...

My serious RAGBRAI training always starts around the TDF. I ramp up on my miles up to and finally through RAGBRAI. Then, unfortunately, life catches up with me and I ramp back down afterward.

I just got the computer, so it's the first time that I've been able to see what I ride - that makes me want to go further and further. The challenge was a good motivator, too...

Hmmm, you should specify a white background behind the main body of the page. Some browsers (like NS and Firefox) default to grey instead of white, so it makes the site look funky if you are on a non-IE browser.
