Cyclocross - Reasonably Priced Wheels?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I picked up a Cross Check on CL, but it is set as a roadie. Besides the roadie gearing (53/39, 11-25, dura ace, ultegra) that I need to replace at some, the wheels are Mavic CXP22s. Mavic Site says max 28, soem have pushed 30, but I want something sturdier and bigger. I will use for commuting, light touring, and then have a set of knobbies for single track and seeing if I can get in shape for a race or two next year.
What is a good bargain?

Put on some 28's for tires and call it a day.
Those wheels should be pretty sturdy.

The CXP22 is the same width as the Open Pro, which is known as a go-to wheel for cross. You could go 32 or 35c without any issues.
The Mavic site said, 19 -28. I was thinking of running 32 or 35. I didn't want to have an issue 10 miles deep on a trail or 50 miles from home on the road.

You won't.
They say that for liability issues. I run 35's on my open pros no problem. There's no issue to be created by running 35's.
