Stumbled on this, in a roundabout way: to connect from the base (in Manhattan) of the Hellish Brooklyn Bridge to the Heavenly Manhattan Bridge, without engaging the usual truck traffic, etc.:

Start going North past the court buildings and continue up Centre. Go just past Canal St, and hang a right on Grand St, where you can experience the "bike lane." I put that in quotes because you have to dodge pedestrians, jugglers, coffee grounds, etc. Still it is kinda amusing.

Then just a quick right on Chrystie for a few blocks and you're there.

New to you! :p

Still a vast improvement over the gridlock that existed previously.

From my experience, the Grand Street bike lane is normally crowded with everything but bikes. People walking in the bike lane, strollers, cars stopping to drop people off, parking, car doors open, hot dog carts... It's often a mess so be careful.

If you go at night in the winter, it's like being in Blade Runner.
