Professional Cycling For the Fans - Who coined the term "99er" ????

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Was it someone from this forum, or has the word "99er" been around for quite some time in cycling culture?

I'm fairly certain it was me. Don D may have but he's not here no more so I'm taking credit!

Tenth anniversary for the Lance haters. Even they are getting old!

I'll second your taking credit...it was a few years ago when this forum was filled (it was even worse years 3-5) with folks that had no idea what they were talking about.
Refers to people that didn't know what a bike race looked like until after 1999. In football they call them "bandwagoners".
at the very least, laggard was the first (http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=500547&postcount=21) to use it on bf.

That's just moronic. Who cares? If it were only 'okay' for grizzled old-timers to be into cycling, the sport would be relegated to an even darker and more-ignored corner of our culture than it currently is.
Laggard for the win. . .
y'all need to chill out, has nothing to do with Lance Haters, or grizzled oldtimers, or dark obscure corners of cycling. It refers to members who knew absolutely nothing about cycling prior to Lance and would then pontificate on tactics, team profiles etc. like they were the second coming of Jacques Goddet, albeit usually incorrectly.
it's like padawan, only cycling instead of starwars.

oh, you mean 217ers.
Even though I have been watching the Tour since LeMond, I imagine there are a lot of 99ers that know a heck of a lot more than the elitists on this board.
you see, you're just not getting it. If the person KNEW what he was talking about he/she never got
labeled a 99er.

Not true. When the lance haters get aggravated they start labeling people who disagree with them as 99ers. And what is your resume?

Oh knock it off with the "Lance haters" crap Julian.
Oh knock it off with the "Lance haters" crap Julian.
Quoted by you: "Don't forget Lance Pharmstrong."
But I will do as you say and eliminate Lance ****** from my vocabulary!

Yes a true 99er is moronic. The difference between a new fan and a 99er is the 99er talks as if they know all about cycling, not just the sport, but the history. The exceptional 99ers were saying Lance was hte greatest ever when he had 4 TDF wins. Note these guys were NOT saying he might turn out to be great, they were saying it like it was established and beyond question. When we had the latest string of Drug DQs the true 99ers would say a winner had never been DQ'd in the TDF before. When some poor 91er would point out that Lance never won 2 tours in one year they wouldbe dismissed with the statement that it is no longer possible, the world today is different. That is perhaps the perfect 99er, as the last time it was done for the Giro/Tour combination was 1998!
A true 99er is not just ignorant they are willfully so.
EDIT: A 99er does not even know Lance won the Worlds in 93. A true Lance fan would know just how importnat that win is when comparing him to another Rider with 7 Major Tour wins.

Why do you disagree with this statement? How long does it take to learn or understand racing tactics? It isn't that difficult to understand. You elitists try to make it sound like it is rocket science. Just cause it is hard for you to understand doesn't mean that the rest of us can't figure it out.
julian, truth be told I think I'm a 73'er, could be 74.
No, its not rocket science, but you're still missing the point. Just wanting to figure it out
and learn the history would disqualify you as a 99er. get it?

I never paid attention to pro cycling, and then only the TDF, until I got OLN on my cable, maybe in 02. Didn't know what the Velo News was until about the same time and my friend passes them along so I can look at the pictures. I only visit this sub forum during the TDF. I wish I had more time to follow the sport but that just ain't happening.

I don't know, but the 89ers are bitter that the 99ers have replaced them. :innocent:

But since you did not start in 99 you are not a 99er. Come to think of it you freely admitted both that you have a fairly recent start to your interest and that you are not an expert. You fail to be a 99er on at least 3 counts.

As the person who coined the term, I can tell you that it is not necessarily a pejorative term.
The other 81ers will agree: the hero is a dangerous thing to worship.
One year in jail, 5 probation for him. Ugh. Eeeew, and Ugh.

It was always fun to read the tour report in Velonews or whatever it was called when it was the USCF publication.
