Mountain Biking - Suspension during 7'+ drops.

Hey,

What happens to the suspension when dropped further than 7' while riding? Would that be considered abuse on a cross-country bike? I'm wondering for hardtails and full-suspensions alike.

Side-question: How much tougher overall is the Specialized Hardrock Sport during drops compared to the Specialized Rockhopper? The heavy Hardrock is torture to take long rides up hills so I might trade it in while I can for a lighter Rockhopper, if my bike shops allows since they said I can refund within 2-weeks of purchase.

What do you mean what happens? It breaks.....thats what happens.....



Side reply:Uhhh....neither bike is meant for drops. The hardrock isnt going to be much heavier than a rockhopper. Suck it up....my bike weighs 50 lbs.

And yes......7 foot drops would be considered abuse on a xc bike, and you will probably break something.

I used to drop over 10ft frequently on my WalMart bikes. Although, those had no suspension.
All of them held up fine until rust through neglect conquered them.

The Rockhopper feels a few pounds lighter than the Hardrock. I'd love to save that weight, but at what expense to toughness I'm wondering.

As I said neither bike is meant to do drops on. Umm...comparing the rockhopper frame to the hardrock I guess I would choose the hardrock for more toughness. 10 foot drops on walmart bikes? Sounds like you are pretty good......get a nice bike and you could go pro.

I know niether is for drops, but I doubt that would stop me from doing frequent small 3 - 5 footers.

My stupidity takes me pretty far in this world. For example: Throwing my 40+lb WalMart bikes across rivers rather than carrying them through made me excellent at shot-put. :)

#1 Well depends on what bike your talking about. A Demo 9 off a 7 footer would probably just absorb it and allow you to ride off. But a walmart bike shock would probably..deffinatly..bottom out and/or break.

#2 Yes I would consider a 7 footer abuse on a XC bike.

look for mt. bike action march issue and itl help you big...

there's no way you can do 10' drops.
